The next generation Toyota Prius is entering its final stages of development and to entice those prospective consumers in we can bring the first shot of the redesigned interior.

The inside word from Japan is that the 2010 version of the landmark hybrid will deliver both better fuel economy and more power. The 1.5-liter engine will be replaced by a larger 100bhp 1.8-liter version which will improve high speed cruising of the vehicle. A new generation electric motor will boost the model's total power to 160bhp and there are rumours of an optional solar panel roof being fitted to the model as well. Improvements will certainly get the thumbs up from the politicians, fuel economy could go down to as low as 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres (80 mpg) whilst emissions may drop below the 100g/km mark.

It may not look it, but the body will be all-new, growing 2.5 centimetres wider, but getting some 3 centimetres shorter in overall length. The Prius' range may also grow from the current one body style, with a sedan variant expected to be launched as well and a little further down the line we should also see a plug-in version.

Looks better, but it's still known as the 'Prius.'

looking good liking that swooping carrera GT centre console haha... as if i compared that to a GT. shame on me :P

by carcrazy1234 | August 23, 2008 3:01 AM
hmmm interesting, im not sure i would call the interior stylish... and im very disapointed that they kept that ugly as hell rear end spoiler thing... i dont like the current prius and it looks like i wont like this one either...

by BabyMilo | August 23, 2008 3:15 AM
I want to be first on line for this one!!! Hey, GM, where are you?

by localized | August 23, 2008 3:45 AM
Where is GM? Lost just like the 1970's all over again. Never had any good fuel mileage cars, muscle cars in the 70's and big trucks in the 2000's.

by eddie | August 23, 2008 4:07 AM
GM didn't get any help from the US Government!

"The Japanese government paid for 100 percent of the development of the battery and hybrid system that went into the Toyota Prius,"

...so says Jim Press, the highest-ranking non-Japanese executive at Toyota before leaving for Chrysler last year. You'd think HE would know something others wouldn’t...??

by Car_nut | August 23, 2008 10:36 AM
now thats a sweet look interior, almost give you the feel that it's a contect. Not digging the steering wheel though.

by dmanero | August 23, 2008 5:09 AM
no matter what they do to try to improve the prius it will still be the most boring car in the market today tomorow and for ever.

by mmr66 | August 23, 2008 6:57 AM
interior is much better looking. almost looks like audi quality

by coopergt | August 23, 2008 8:09 AM
wow, does the laptop come free with it lol?

by great_supercars255 | August 23, 2008 10:18 AM
if not the car is ruined

by great_supercars255 | August 23, 2008 7:00 PM
Nice alloys...! But think I'd prefer a Golf GTi.

You know some Toyota's and Lexus' are fitted with a sleep warning device, in case the driver falls asleep?

...SUMS UP the Toyota driving experience :)

by Car_nut | August 23, 2008 10:30 AM
"But think I'd prefer a Golf GTi."

what a pointless comparison!!

by linkman | August 23, 2008 10:37 AM
Really? See Bosch's take on Hybrids

by Car_nut | August 23, 2008 10:54 AM
...But in my home market there is a $35 dollar price difference between the cost of a top-of-the-range Prius and a Golf GTi.

For the money I would know which I would buy...

by Car_nut | August 23, 2008 11:02 AM
$35!?!?!?!?!? wow, thats like, nothing!

by great_supercars255 | August 23, 2008 11:07 AM
i think prius is built to be driven in a different way than the golf gti.it exists just to take people from one place to another in comfort consuming as less as possible. the gti and much more the m3 are built to offer driving pleasure, and these cases fuel cost is not a big issue. concerning the top gear video i suppose we cannot come in a clue by watching a prius being struggled to go fast in a track, sth it is not made to do.

by linkman | August 23, 2008 11:11 AM
its other name "Toyota Pointless"

by Pentium | August 23, 2008 3:29 PM
The interior is straight from all those 90's films where th cars could fly. And its a prius so.. two reasons to hate it. Top Gear already proved that the new M3 has better fuel economy than the prius. CRAPPY CAR.

by Ipsesnipse | August 23, 2008 10:11 PM
Top gear make a false review on Prius vs M3: They put the prius at top performance. duhh!! of ourse is gona spent more gas! now, what they didn't do was to put the M3 at Prius normal ride...that would be interesting to see...specialy in city trafic!!!

by rxlonline | August 24, 2008 1:44 AM
I prefer to be in M3 in city traffic anytime! I can't just imagine my self in this Toyota Crap!

by Pentium | August 24, 2008 4:07 AM
BTW: Toyota always try to improve they cars and make them a litle bit more futuristic at a time, specially the interior. others don't. More, german cars suck! they reliability are the bigest crap in the world, they (specialy VW) are getting even worse then French cars!

by rxlonline | August 24, 2008 1:48 AM
it's pointless, pointless and pointless :) and u are wrong about German Cars.

by Pentium | August 24, 2008 4:05 AM
What are you talking about german cars are the most reliable cars in the world.

by ipsesnipse | August 24, 2008 11:26 AM
i wouldnt be intersted a tinyest bit in that kinda review. I just dont get why the prius is seen as such a good hybrid, it is full of crap. Hondas 2,2 litre civic diesel hybrid is alot better and it has a decent engine too witch doesnt make you insane because lack of power while driving. Or the golf GT it aint a hybrid but still has virtually same fueleconomy but accelerates in just over 8s 0-100km/h. So the prius has no real noticable

by ipsesnipse | August 24, 2008 11:40 AM
take that back about german cars! Audi Vw Porsche Bmw and more are all german- some german cars a bad, but the makes are brilliant! Audi R8-Golf R32-Porsche GT3 RS-BMW M3!

by great_supercars255 | August 25, 2008 10:51 AM
and the bugatti veyron is french- how is that worse than a golf????

by great_supercars255 | August 25, 2008 10:52 AM
lol! you are talking about super cars!! what they have to do with the Prius category? And yes german car have very bad reliability specialy de VW group (except the owner porche), if u don't belive search for the satisfaction report of the JD Powers in the last years...

by rxlonline | August 25, 2008 1:33 PM
is it just me or did the wheels get bigger??? the "old" prius had pretty small wheels and wheel wells... this new prius mule has much bigger wheels wells, no???

and to place the auto/CVT tranny into the center console instead next to the steering wheel is a good move, the old small handle was to small and kind of odd!!!

i hope the suspension gets much better and sportier and i might give it a second look... i test drove the latest prius in 2002 and loved the concept, but the ride and acceleration were huge trade offs....

by smokeonit1 | August 24, 2008 6:46 AM
I would prefer the old one that has a free space linking the dash and the centre console... now the new one looks cramped. nevertheless it looks ok IMO. still has that "Toyota" feel.

by pscs | August 24, 2008 9:00 PM
I like the current one better. Seems more futuristic and unique. The new one could be the interior or any car.

by ravipatel | August 24, 2008 9:47 PM
Are you kidding? the Current one's interior looks dated ever since it came out. only the gauges where futuristic. The new one's more modern at least.

by Tuner_mad | August 24, 2008 11:22 PM
I like it, the last one had that lame profile with a peak in the middle. This one looks more cohesive from these shots. Plus the interior shows a more unified theme. My friend has a Prius, and the lame thing on the old interior was all the grey areas were painnted, so in no time at all they were scratched and marked all over the console. Hopefully this version will not use a painted interior. The only other thing I have to say is that a Diesel engine, or a Diesel hybrid is still a better starting point for two reasons: Better low-end torque and they can run on almost any fuel. The hybrid life-cycle is too mineral intensive; where are all the batteries going to go when they wear out? i guess the whole green-car-craze is a good place to start, it is better than doing nothing to reduce dependence on oil. Peace!

by Alfafox5 | August 24, 2008 11:25 PM
Ok, first off alot of you are confused and hear lots of stories that you believe right away. I've had my Prius for 2 months now and after owning lots of Hondas and other cars, the Prius is by FAR the best car I've owned. The car has more power then most of you think, and after owning a 500hp Talon and 800 hp pro street car I can say this car can keep up with traffic no problem. As for batteries Alfafox5 they are recyclable and there has only been a few since 1997 that have actually been replaced. There are lots of Prius' out there with over 500,000kms on them and all that they've had done to them is changed the oil, tires and brakes. You guys need to stop believing everything you hear.

by Prius06 | August 25, 2008 7:02 AM
Nice to hear you are a satisfied Hybrid customer. It is admirable that such technology is made available to the consumer. As it stands, I feel the 1.5 engine may be a little too small, and battery technology has a way to go before a hybrid becomes truly feasible for some. Certainly the former will be addressed with Prius3 ( per text above).

Incidentally, in Europe we have a 320d BMW. Admittedly it is about 20% more expensive than the Prius. However, it is a relatively clean, environmentally friendly car. For your information, I have provided a comparison below: 320d Prius Emissions (CO2 g/km) 128 104 0-60 mph (seconds) 8.4 11.9 Top speed (mph) 148 104 Mpg (imp) [official] 60 65 Range (miles) 790 ?? It should be noted that the Prius has struggled to match the official fuel consumption figures, perhaps dropping by about 10 mpg or more. The BMW is near enough there, and 60 mpg (imperial) is about 70 mpg (US). Plus the fact the BMW is an enjoyable drive.

Another point to note is that the American market is averse to diesels. The 320d is whisper quiet. Alongside the Rolls Royce Phantom, Mercedes S500, Maybach 62 one finds the 325d. (okay don’t have figures for the 320d but the next bigger engine up 325d - just to demonstrate it doesn't sound like a tractor) Source: http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/kaufberatung/kataloge/hxcms_article_514452_13987.hbs

Given the choice I would opt for the 320d. I know it may not be available in your market, which I feel is a shame.

by car_nut | August 27, 2008 7:11 PM
oppps table format (2nd paragraph)lost: Should read: Emissions (CO2 g/km)- 320d 128; Prius 104 0-60 mph (seconds) - 320d 8.4; Prius 11.9 Max speed (mph) - 320d 148; Prius 104 Mpg (imp) (official)- 320d 60; Prius 65 Range (miles) - 320d 790; Prius ??

by car_nut | August 27, 2008 7:18 PM
lost again.. ho hum

by car_nut | August 27, 2008 7:19 PM
Ya, we don't have bmw's that can get anywhere past 30mpg (imp) However, without trying most people can get 60 mpg (imp) or better out of the Prius. I personally get consistantly 64 mpg (imp) or 4.5L/100kms

Not to mention the price differance between the 2 cars. But as most new comers say on Priuschat.com....Have to drive one to understand it.

by prius06 | August 28, 2008 3:11 AM
Sorry you don't get that full range of BMWs or other Euro cars...

I used to work in the car industry, which included 10 years in the USA... I've driven pretty much everything. I do like and drive American muscle cars and understand the differences in car culture on both sides of the Atlantic, which is sometimes overlooked on various posts on this site.

Yes, I've driven all Toyotas including the Prius a number of times. I found it okay, but not something I had to dash out and buy immediately. Nor did I want to confirm with the "tree hugger" street cred image this car may convey.

But be honest, if you had that shiny new Camaro (featured elsewhere on this website) parked on your driveway, right next to your Prius greeting you in the mornings..., would you take the Prius first time, everytime? If so, it would be a bit like having a meal in MacDonalds when you could have had a meal in Ruth Chris or Mortons... (then again, you may be a vegetarian! hmmm, I'm now seeing the link between vegetarians and hybrids...)

I've often wondered why Americans with super low gas prices are so worried about fuel economy? Even at $4 / gallon it is still cheap by the $10 /gallon in the UK. My Mustang only took $30 to top up the last time @ $3.94 / gallon. Perhaps I don't do the mileage.

Let’s face it, regardless what anyone may say, the US has THE largest oil reserves in the world. Think there should be enough to power those muscle cars then...! (Before they become hydrogen powered)

Enjoy your Prius. I do eat at MacDonalds sometimes (not a lot but I do)
